E per numero egli ha numerato le stagioni;

The Book of Enoch is in some ways, the most notable existing apocalyptic work outside of the canonical Scriptures, it will not be inappropriate here to offer some observations on apocalyptic literature in general. What you want, then, in studying the Apocalypse it is, above all, the understanding of the ideas in the mean, and above all the belief in the new Age. Those who believe that in Christianity there is a new era really, I think, to have a liking …. We study the Apocalypses to learn how our spiritual ancestors still hoped that God would do well in the end; and that we, their children, we are here today to study them in the hope that it was not entirely unfounded.

In all the books belonging to this literature and that they have come down to us this hope is expressed more or less vividly; not the dark background they want with prophecies of impending wrath. Now, since, as we have seen, the desperation of the Apocalyptic of any improvement in the current world, split up its destruction as a preliminary of the new order of things, look away from this world in their visions of the future; conceive other worldly forces that come into play in the reconstitution of things, and society in general; and since these are forces of the supernatural world, it plays a big role in the Apocalyptic Literature. This supernatural coloration often strikes the reader of this literature as fantastic, and sometimes bizarre; but this should not obscure the reality that often lies behind these strange shadows.

The mental visions are often not easily expressed in words; the seer in a vision he received a message to some fantastic dresses necessarily engraved in mind what he saw when gives his message; and when describing the vision of the picture it presents is, in the nature of the case, more fantastic for the ear of the listener and for the eye of one who saw it. You should take this into account; especially Westerners who are so lacking in imagination rich dell’Orientale.Un’altra thing to the Apocalyptic literature reader must be prepared, is the frequent inconsistency of thought that is in it, along with the teaching variability often falls into contradiction . The reason for this does not lie simply in the fact that in the Apocalypse there is the hand of more than one author of which is frequently difficult to distinguish, which would easily reason of divergence of views in the same book, the main reason is that, by on the one hand, the minds of Apocalyptic were saturated with the thoughts and the traditional ideas of the Old Testament, and on the other, were avid to absorb the latest conceptions that the spirit of the time had come into being.

Once again, to realize the meaning that lies in these apocalypses, one has to deal with a rigid sense of predestination that was a feature of the Apocalyptic as a whole. They started with the absolute conviction that the whole course of the world, from beginning to end, both as regards its physical changes and also in everything related to the history of nations, their growth and the decline, and of each individual, both in every aspect predetermined by God Almighty before all time. This belief Apocalyptic is well illustrated in a subsequent Apocalypse in these words:

“He weighed the age in the balance,
And the number he numbered the seasons;
Nor moves or makes waves,
To the extent designated is satisfied.
(Ii. (Iv.) Ezra IV2. 36, 37)

But all these things, according to the Apocalyptic, were sublime secrets hidden from the beginning of the world, but revealed to fear God, men who have been granted the right to scrutinize the secrets of God and of their understanding; of these men was placed the privilege and duty to reveal the divine secrets to others, hence their name Apocalyptic or “detectors”. It was because the Apocalyptists believed so firmly in this power that they possess to see the deep things of God who claimed to be able to measure the significance of what had happened in the past and what was happening in the present; and based on this knowledge believed to also have the power, given to him by God, to predict the course of future events; above all, to know when the end of the world comes, the fulfillment toward which the whole history of the world tended from the start.

Overall, the Apocalyptic Literature presents a universalistic attitude very different from that of the Pharisees nationalistic narrowness. It ‘s true, the Apocalyptists are not always consistent in this, but normally embrace the Gentiles (pagans) and men of their own nation in the divine scheme of salvation; and, likewise, the wicked who are excluded are not limited to the Gentiles, but just as with the Jews who have to suffer the agony later on the basis of their merits. Apocalyptic Literature, unlike the Apocalyptic Movement through which it originated, was founded around 200-150 BC, in any case, the first existing example of this literature are the first portions of the Book of Enoch. The general point of view Pharisee about this can be collected in Matt. iii. 7-10 that they belong to this period. The works of Apocalyptic character, continued to be written for almost three centuries; the second (fourth) Book of Ezra, one of the best Apocalypses, belongs to the late first Christian century. There are rear Apocalissi, some of lesser interest are by far the later; but the real period of Apocalyptic Literature of from about 200 BC to c. 100 d.C .; its origins go back, then, to an earlier era of that great landmark in Jewish history, was Maccabean.
