In his trip to Egypt, Champollion wanted to devote little time to visit the Middle Egypt, the territory of the areas between Memphis and Thebes (Luxor). He wanted to go as quickly as possible towards Upper Egypt. However the Beni Hassan tombs interested him much, so he paused in those places for a couple of weeks and then move quickly to Assiut.

For the city of Tell el-Amarna was the only one day to visit. Here the Jesuit Father Sicard, in November of 1714, had made copies of a boundary stele of Akhenaten and scholars in the wake of Napoleon Bonaparte had discovered in the same locality Called the “El Till”, the presence of the remains of an ancient city .

Before the arrival of Champollion, in 1824, Wilkinson had discovered the rock tombs of Akhenaten’s officials, making a copy, but his report was published only many years after the death of Champollion. The latter did not have time to endorse the rock tombs. They were too far apart; only visited the site of the city. In his work on Egyptian history, an appendix to his letters from Egypt, he passes by Amenhotep III to his son “Horus”, which continued the work of his father, but had two weak successors, until reaching Sethos I, Egypt that led back to a renewed gorgeous bloom.

Champollion knew nothing of Akhenaten and radical innovations promoted by this pharaoh, if what emerges from his fleeting observations on particular characteristics of the art of this period compared to the traditional style. Yet these notes are a step forward, because, before 1826, the European collections did not include any work relates to the art of Amarna. Only thanks to Wilkinson and Lepsius that the foundations of our knowledge of an era were thrown in which culture and religion had for a time of great transformations.

In that time frame was introduced a new literary language, and above all, for the first time in history, it was founded a new theological system. Which to our knowledge it has never happened anywhere else in the world.
